What Tree Removal Actually Costs in Metro Detroit

Tree removal pricing confuses people because two trees that look the same can be $600 apart. This is what actually drives the number in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb County in 2026, plus honest ranges you can use to sanity check a quote.

The five things that move the price

1. Access, which is bigger than size

The single biggest cost driver is not how tall the tree is. It is whether we can get equipment to it. A 70 foot oak in an open front yard where a bucket truck can park on the driveway can be cheaper than a 45 foot maple in a fenced backyard with a 36 inch gate, because the second one has to be climbed, and every single limb has to be roped down and carried out by hand. If you have a wide gate or a removable fence panel, say so when you get quotes. It can knock hundreds off.

2. What is underneath it

An open lawn means we can drop big pieces. A patio, a pool, a shed, a fence, a septic field, or a neighbor's garage means everything gets rigged and lowered on ropes. Rigging roughly doubles the labor time.

3. Dead versus alive

Counterintuitive but true. A dead tree costs more, not less. Dead wood is brittle and unpredictable, climbers will not trust it, and a lot of dead trees require a crane or a bucket that a live tree of the same size would not. Every year you wait on a dead ash, the removal gets more expensive.

4. Power lines

Anything near the service drop to your house adds time and care. Anything near primary high voltage lines is DTE's job, not ours. Call DTE at 800-477-4747 and they usually handle line clearance at no cost to you.

5. Wood disposal

Hauling everything off is standard and included in most quotes. If you burn and want the wood bucked and stacked on site, that can save you a little. If you want it split, that is a separate service and most tree companies charge for it.

Costs by city

Pricing does not vary enormously across Metro Detroit, but there are patterns. Tight older cities like Warren, Royal Oak, and parts of Detroit run higher per tree because of access constraints and rigging. Newer suburbs like Shelby Township, Novi, and parts of Rochester Hills tend to run lower because equipment can get to the tree. Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills run higher for a different reason: bigger trees, more landscaping to protect, and permit requirements that add administrative time.

Red flags in a quote

A firm price over the phone on a large tree. Nobody can price a 70 foot removal from a description. That number will change.
No proof of insurance. Ask for a certificate showing general liability and workers compensation. Call the agent on the certificate if the job is big.
Door knockers after a storm. Some are legitimate local crews. A lot are out of state storm chasers who take a deposit and disappear.
Large upfront deposits. A deposit on a big job is normal. Half the total before anyone shows up is not.
An offer to "top" your tree. Topping is malpractice. It means whoever is quoting you is not trained.

How to actually save money

Bundle. Three trees on one visit costs much less per tree than three separate visits. The setup is the expensive part.
Grind the stump on the same trip. Bringing the grinder back later means paying for the trip twice.
Go in winter. January through March is the slow season for most Michigan tree companies. Frozen ground also means less lawn damage.
Keep the chips. Letting a crew leave chips on site saves disposal cost, and they make good bed mulch.
Do not wait. A declining tree removed this year is cheaper than a dead one removed in three years, and much cheaper than an emergency removal after it comes through the roof.
