Full versus selective clearing
Full clearing takes everything down to bare dirt, which is what a builder needs. Selective clearing keeps the good specimen trees and removes the junk, which is what most homeowners actually want. Michigan lots are full of box elder, buckthorn, and volunteer mulberry crowding out oaks and hickories that are worth keeping. Deciding that on a site walk saves you money and gives you a better lot.
Pricing
Brush and understory clearing runs roughly $1,200 to $2,500 per acre. Heavy clearing with mature trees runs $3,000 to $7,000 per acre depending on stem count and haul distance. Chipping on site and leaving the chips is the cheapest disposal option. Grinding stumps and hauling everything off is the most expensive.
Before you hire anyone: ask for a certificate of insurance showing both general liability and workers compensation, and get the estimate in writing. Those two things filter out most of the problems people run into with tree companies.
